The vacation season is just around the corner – or perhaps it has already begun for some. And with that comes the desire to quickly learn a few words in the local language before going on vacation. Maybe you know the situation: you have big plans but don’t feel like buying several expensive language learning apps or thick travel guides. That’s exactly how I feel.
But there is a smart solution – and it’s called ChatGPT.
In this post, I’ll show you how you can easily learn Italian (or any other language) with ChatGPT – with a customized custom GPT or with the normal ChatGPT model. All you need is a ChatGPT subscription – and a little curiosity.
Step 1: Create a custom GPT for your language training
I have built myself a custom GPT that I use like a personal language trainer. I have defined how this GPT should interact with me:
- First he asks me which language I would like to learn.
- Then he tells me a little story about the country – a nice start to the learning session.
- Then he wants to know: Chat or quiz? I can decide depending on my mood on the day.
- When I chat, he actively continues the dialog, but corrects my mistakes – so I learn grammar and expression along the way.
It almost feels like a real conversation and I’m improving my language skills at the same time. And: It’s super flexible.
Step 2: Practice with creative tasks
In addition to chatting, I also use ChatGPT to get specific exercises – e.g. on Italian grammar. I simply say: “Explain the rules for the past tense ” – and ChatGPT delivers:
- a detailed explanation
- suitable examples
- an exercise on request, e.g. a cloze text in a vacation setting
The great thing is that you can also do these exercises together with your family or children. Language learning becomes a shared activity – without vocabulary cards or textbook vibes.
Step 3: Translation help via projects
Because I often communicate with Italians, I have also set up a ChatGPT project. In this project room, ChatGPT works like a personal translator:
- I’ll write what I want to say in German.
- ChatGPT translates it into simple, correct Italian.
- The style remains natural – ideal for emails, chats or social media.
I only set this overarching prompt once, and from then on everything runs automatically. Mega practical!

You don’t need ten different apps if you use ChatGPT cleverly. Whether as a chat partner, exercise creator or translator – you can use the tool individually for your language learning. Try it out, design your own custom GPT or use the one I’ve linked in the video.
