There are two big names in the world of artificial intelligence that are currently attracting a lot of attention: ChatGPT from OpenAI and Gemini from Google. Both tools offer extensive functions for text generation, creative work or research – but what are the differences? And which tool is better suited to your needs?
In the following article, we take a look at the key functions of both assistants – practical, easy to understand and up to date for 2025.
1. the basic idea: two powerful tools, different strengths
First things first: Both AI tools are powerful and pursue a similar goal – to help you work, research or create content. The comparison is somewhat reminiscent of Apple vs. Microsoft: in the end, a lot is a matter of taste, but the details make the difference.
2 Comparison of language models and answers
ChatGPT (in the Pro version) offers access to various language models – including GPT-4 and GPT-4-Turbo. The answers are structured, often with tables, timetables or even linked sources.
Gemini from Google also provides clear results, but can export them directly to other Google services – e.g. as a Google Doc or Gmail draft. This makes it particularly useful if you work in the Google ecosystem.
3. special functions of ChatGPT
- Canvas mode: Here you can continue working directly in the reply field, add content or have ChatGPT make adjustments.
- Custom GPTs: Individual AI assistants that you can create and – this is the difference to Gemini – share with others.
- Projects: With this function, you organize thematic chats and give the assistant a specific role within a project.
- Media functions: Generate images, web search, deep research and even video creation via Sora – all directly integrated.
4. special functions of Gemini
- Export tools: One of Gemini’s greatest strengths is its integration with Google Workspace. Content can be transferred directly to Google Docs or Gmail.
- Canvas function: Gemini also offers an editing interface that looks more like a Word document – incl. Formatting, highlighting and design options.
- Gems instead of custom GPTs: You can also build your own wizards here. The difference: They are not divisible – so you only work with them yourself.
5. what is missing in each case?
ChatGPT currently lacks direct integration into Google Workspace.
Gemini, on the other hand, offers no project structure, no divisible custom GPTs and no open extensibility like ChatGPT.
6. data protection: no real difference
An important note at the end: No matter which tool you use – the data ends up with the respective providers. The two services hardly differ in terms of data protection.
Conclusion: Which assistant is right for you?
If you work a lot in the Google universe and a direct export to Gmail or Google Docs is important to you, Gemini may be the better choice.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for flexible workflows, custom GPTs and project-based work, you are in good hands with ChatGPT.
The best thing to do is to try both and find out which tool you feel more comfortable with.
