ChatGPT the chatbot that does our homework, finds us the right recipe, writes a letter of resignation or blog posts like this one.
But anyone who has ever used ChatGPT quickly realizes that the chatbot doesn’t always write the way we expected it to.
There can be two reasons for these unexpected texts:
- The chatbot doesn’t know any better, or the database is insufficient
- The chatbot has received the wrong command.
The second reason is usually due to an error on the part of the user. In technical jargon, this is referred to as prompts.
Prompts are, so to speak, the commands that a user gives the OpenAI chatbot to formulate a text. In reality, the right “prompt” is sometimes not so easy. Users need to think very carefully in advance about what they actually expect from the chatbot and what goals they are pursuing with the desired text.
Below is a small list that can help you formulate the right prompts:
1. define in which role and from which perspective ChatGPT should answer!
“You are rock singer and are in love”.
2. formulate a clear task!
“Write a love letter to your neighbor who doesn’t know you’re in love yet.”
3. name further criteria, such as aspects and references, that should be taken into account!
“Go into how you met in the parking lot last week”
4. make it clear which overarching goal is to be achieved!
“You want to invite her to dinner, she should accept the invitation”.
5 Specify the format, tone and style of the final product!
“The invitation should not sound too slimy and should not take longer than 1 minute to read”
6. give feedback on the answer, practice criticism and specify in which respect the answer should be changed!
“Write not too flowery”
