If you regularly use AI-supported tools such as ChatGPT, you may have heard of Perplexity – or even already use it. Recently, it has become apparent that many users prefer this alternative, especially for searches or as a supplement to classic Google searches. But what makes Perplexity so special? What functions does it offer and who is it suitable for? In this article, I will introduce you to the most important features and benefits of Perplexity.
What is perplexity and what is it suitable for?
Like ChatGPT, Perplexity is an AI-supported assistant. It is particularly suitable for people who research regularly or require extensive collections of information. Thanks to the integrated source citation, it is also a useful addition to the classic Google search and helps to check content and facts in a comprehensible way.
The most important functions at a glance
1. settings and language models
Perplexity already shows interesting possibilities in the settings. In addition to selecting an avatar and user name, you can choose between different language models – including well-known models such as GPT-4, Claude or GROK. Perplexity also offers several models for image generation, such as DALL-E or Playground.
One exciting feature is the ability to test voice and image models against each other. This allows you to compare which model delivers the best results for your specific application.
Note on data protection: All models are hosted by external providers, which means that data protection is not at the level of on-premise solutions. This must therefore be taken into account for sensitive data.
2. free vs. pro version
Perplexity offers a solid free version that already covers many functions. Users can submit up to three Pro requests per day – ideal for trying out the extended features. The Pro version is particularly worthwhile for power users who want to use the tool intensively.
My tip: Before buying a subscription, check whether you really need the additional functions on a regular basis. It is often enough to focus on one or two tools and acquire specific licenses instead of paying for every AI tool.
3. research with sources
A big plus point of Perplexity is the display of sources for each answer. The tool lists the websites used so that you can check the information. This transparency makes Perplexity particularly useful for research – even if not all sources are always the most trustworthy.
Example: When organizing an alumni event in Ticino, Perplexity shows cultural highlights and nature experiences, together with source links. You can access the linked pages directly and check the information further.
4. upload and process files
Another practical feature is the option to upload files. You can import PDFs, images or other documents and work with them directly. For example, new suggestions or texts can be quickly created from an uploaded agenda of a past event.
5. invitation texts and follow-up prompts
Perplexity not only helps with information searches, but also with text creation. For example, you can generate an invitation text for an event. In addition, the tool offers follow-up prompts to refine the search or ask the next question based on previous answers.
6. sharing and working together as a team
An exciting feature for teams is the option to share dialogs. You can copy links to your research and share them with colleagues. Perplexity also allows the creation of “rooms”, which work in a similar way to the new project functions in ChatGPT. In these rooms, you can organize topics and even define instructions on how the AI should react.
7. image search and generation
One difference to other tools lies in the image generation. Perplexity first shows existing images and only offers the option of creating your own images in the next step. You can choose between different styles, such as photography or illustrations.
8. focus mode for targeted search
In focus mode, you can restrict your research to specific areas, such as videos, social networks or academic sources. This function is particularly useful if you need targeted results.
Conclusion: Who is Perplexity suitable for?
Perplexity is an excellent alternative to ChatGPT, especially for those who do a lot of research and value source references. It combines the strengths of an AI with the transparency of a classic search engine and offers additional functions such as file uploads, team rooms and image generation.
