Artifacts in Claude: How to create your own small AI tools without programming

*Thisarticle is based on a YouTube video by Sophie Hundertmark, an expert in the use of artificial intelligence with a focus on chatbots and strategic AI applications in companies and public institutions. Sophie is a researcher and lecturer at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and is doing her doctorate in Conversational AI at the University of Fribourg. The blog text was created using a custom GPT model that was trained on Sophie’s video content, language style and expertise. The result is well-founded, up-to-date articles based on Sophie Hundertmark‘s own expertise.

Many people are already familiar with the custom GPT function from ChatGPT. This allows individual AI assistants to be created that take on specific tasks – for example, writing social media posts or summarizing texts.

However, if you use Claude and are looking for a similar option, you will find it in the so-called artifacts. This function allows you to create small applications that are specially developed for your own workflows.

In this post I’ll show you,

  • what artifacts are in Claude
  • how you create them
  • and when their use is particularly worthwhile.

What are artifacts in Claude?

Artifacts are small AI-based tools or applications that you can create directly within Claude. You can think of it as a mixture of:

  • Custom GPTs
  • small apps
  • and automated workflows

introduce.

The big advantage: You can create your own application that is precisely tailored to your use case without any programming knowledge.

Typical examples are

  • Generators for social media posts
  • small text analysis tools
  • Simple content generators
  • internal helpers for marketing or communication

Artifacts can be created for yourself as well as for other users or teams.

Where can you find the artifacts function?

When you open Claude, you will find the “Artifacts” section in the sidebar.

There you can see:

  • an overview of already created artifacts
  • Examples from other users
  • the option to create a new artifact

Click on “Create new artifact” to start the development process directly.

Create artifact: Step by step

The process is surprisingly simple. Claude guides you step by step through the creation process.

1. select idea for the tool

First you decide what type of application you want to create.

For example:

  • a small app
  • a web tool
  • an AI assistant

In our example, we will create a tool for LinkedIn posts.

2. describe the function

Now you simply describe to Claude in natural language what you want your tool to do.

For example:

  • A tool that creates LinkedIn posts from keywords

Claude then asks for further details, such as:

  • Who is the tool intended for?
  • Which functions are important?
  • Which AI features should be included?

You can answer these questions or skip them.

3. check proposal for the tool

Claude then creates a plan for the tool.

It states, for example:

  • which functions will be included
  • what input the tool expects
  • what the result should look like

You can accept or adapt this plan.

An example of customization:

  • Set the length of LinkedIn posts
  • Define language
  • Remove additional parameters

Automatic code generation

As soon as you confirm the plan, Claude will automatically start generating the code for the application.

This process usually only takes a few seconds.

A functional interface for your tool will then appear on the right-hand side.

If you know how to program, you can even reproduce or further optimize the code. For most users, however, this is not even necessary – the tool already works.

Example: LinkedIn Post Generator

In our example, a LinkedIn Post Generator is created.

The tool works like this:

  1. You enter a few key points
  2. You choose a tone of voice (e.g. inspirational or storytelling)
  3. The tool automatically generates a LinkedIn post

The generated post can then:

  • copied directly
  • adapted
  • or newly generated

If you don’t like something – such as the length of the post – you can simply adjust the description in the prompt.

Claude then automatically adjusts the code of the tool.

Publish and share artifact

As soon as you are happy with your tool, you can publish it.

Claude offers several options for this:

  • only for yourselves
  • for your team
  • Public on the web

After publication, you will receive a link to your tool.

You can:

  • Share with others
  • in your team
  • or even embed it on a website

In this way, a small AI app is created from just a few inputs that others can use directly.

Artifacts vs. custom GPTs

Many people ask themselves: What is the difference to custom GPTs?

The answer: artifacts go a small step further.

Custom GPTs are primarily AI assistants with specific instructions.

Artifacts, on the other hand, can also:

  • have their own interface
  • Input fields and buttons contain
  • can be used as small web apps

This makes them more flexible than custom GPTs, but at the same time simpler than real development platforms.

When should you use artifacts?

Artifacts are particularly suitable for simple tools or internal helpers.

For example for:

  • Content generators
  • Marketing tools
  • Text optimization
  • Idea generators
  • Small automations

However, if you want to develop complex apps or complete websites, you should use specialized tools.

For example on platforms such as:

  • AI App Builder
  • Low-code tools
  • or coding tools

Artifacts tend to be the quick and uncomplicated solution for small applications.

Conclusion: An exciting extension for Claude

The artifacts function shows very well where AI tools are heading:
from pure chatbots to small, customizable applications.

You can use it within a few minutes:

  • Develop your own tools
  • Automate recurring tasks
  • Create small AI apps
  • and even share them with others

This can be enormously helpful for marketing, content creation or knowledge work in particular.

If you are already using Claude, it is definitely worth trying out the artifacts and implementing your own ideas.
