ChatGPT in everyday family life: how to use AI responsibly

*Thisarticle is based on a YouTube video by Sophie Hundertmark, an expert in the use of artificial intelligence with a focus on chatbots and strategic AI applications in companies and public institutions. Sophie is a researcher and lecturer at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and is doing her doctorate in Conversational AI at the University of Fribourg. The blog text was created using a custom GPT model that was trained on Sophie’s video content, language style and expertise. The result is well-founded, up-to-date articles based on Sophie Hundertmark‘s own expertise.

Artificial intelligence has long been part of our everyday lives. Tools such as ChatGPT are not only used in a professional context, but are increasingly finding their place in family life. But how can AI be used responsibly – especially when children are at the table?

This is exactly what this article is about. You will be given concrete ideas on how to integrate AI in a meaningful way without losing sight of critical thinking, creativity or data protection.

AI in everyday family life: support instead of prohibition

Children grow up with digital technologies as a matter of course. That’s why it’s not about keeping AI out completely. It is much more important to empower children at an early age:

  • Understanding AI as support
  • Critically scrutinize results
  • Data protection to be taken into account
  • to recognize when your own thinking is more important

AI is a tool. It can inspire, structure and provide ideas – but it is no substitute for thinking for yourself.

Story evening with ChatGPT: Developing creativity together

A particularly simple example is the digital story night.

Instead of inventing a story yourself, you can ask ChatGPT:

“Make up a story about a child and a talking robot.”

An individual story is created within a few seconds. However, the real added value lies in the dialog: You can make adjustments together, change characters or develop an alternative ending.

Perhaps your child would like the robot to be able to fly or have a pet. Then the prompt is adjusted – and the story continues to grow.

AI becomes a creative sparring partner. It remains important: It does not replace the classic book. AI complements, not supplants.

Plan your weekly menu with AI: practical relief in everyday life

AI also offers concrete support for adults.

One example is meal planning. A possible prompt could be:

“Create a balanced vegetarian weekly menu plan for a family with two children (6-9 years), maximum preparation time 30 minutes.”

You will receive a structured meal plan that you can refine further:

  • seasonal recipes
  • Budget targets
  • Quick lunch dishes
  • special ingredients

Even if you are unsure, you can ask: How to prepare it in a child-friendly way? Are there alternatives? A step-by-step guide?

AI does not cook for you. But it takes the effort out of thinking and provides inspiration.

Promoting critical thinking

AI systems are based on probabilities. They can make mistakes or provide inaccurate information.

It is therefore crucial to sensitize children:

  • Is this information really true?
  • Does that sound logical?
  • Would we put it the same way?

This creates real media competence. AI is not blindly trusted, but used in a considered way.

Don’t forget data protection

Data protection is a particularly important issue in the family context. Do not enter any sensitive data, such as:

  • complete names
  • Addresses
  • School names
  • personal details

Children should understand early on that digital systems process data and that you make conscious decisions about what you share.

Conclusion: consciously integrating AI

AI in everyday family life can encourage creativity, facilitate planning and stimulate conversations. However, it is no substitute for books, cooking together or independent thinking.

The key question is not whether children will grow up with AI – but how we will support them.

If you use AI transparently, reflect on it critically and talk about it actively with your children, it will become a valuable learning tool.
