When I organized a meetup in December 2019 as part of my AI for Business Community incl. Chatbot Workshop in Berlin, I had the great fortune to meet Oliver Oest from Tinkerbelle Advertising and was even able to get him interested in the topic of “chatbots” very quickly.
After a good 2 hours of chatbot workshop together with Urs Mäder, Patrick Hummel and Samuel Marti from aiaibot, Oliver understood the benefits and purpose of chatbots and knew how to use the new technology successfully for his advertising agency.
Achieving great success with little effort and a lot of creativity – that is Tinkerbelle’s recipe for success.
The advertising agency wants to be perceived by its target group as innovative, humorous and close to the customer. Tinkerbelle is always
To this end, the company has published a fun little Advent chatbot on its website with the chatbot platform aiaibot.com to coincide with the Christmas season.
The agency’s target group is from the world of marketing and media, where people like to be on first-name terms and tend to use simple or informal language.
The bot also speaks directly to website visitors and asks what they are looking for.
If a user now enters that they are looking for gifts and have been very good, i.e. they really deserve a gift, they are directed to the advertising agency’s latest and funny blog article.
Of course, further calls-to-action are placed on the landing page of the blog article, giving the user the opportunity to contact the agency.
If a user indicates that they have not been good, they are shown a suitable GIF (moving image), which raises a finger and is intended as a kind of warning.
The primary goal of the chatbot is to motivate customers to have an initial, good-humored interaction during agency screening. This has been achieved repeatedly. The bot speaks directly to website visitors and engages them in a conversation. This immediately increases the time users spend on the website. The target group begins to engage with the agency and its projects and offers. This immediately leads to a stronger bond or the development of a relationship. This helps when it comes to deciding on the right advertising agency. Tinkerbelle has observed that conversations with new customers take place on a different, more familiar level. Another effect became clear: some chatbot users take screenshots of the bot and publish them on Facebook, thus increasing its reach even further.
The agency wanted to position itself as innovative, creative and fun. The fact that the agency has gained an innovative advantage with its chatbot storylines has not only become clear from new business discussions: In addition, the number of unsolicited applications has increased measurably since the introduction of the chatbot.
The bot has remained in people’s memories and even after the Christmas period, the Tinkerbelle team has been able to generate further interest in making contact thanks to the funny little chatbot.
The effort Tinkerbelle put into this chatbot was very small, the success huge. The concept for the chatbot was ready in just a few hours. It was clear that the bot should be fun and simple. It was decided that the bot should be enriched with emojis. The content, which was created in the form of a dialog tree, was also written in just a few hours.
The team made a conscious decision not to use free text. You want to make it as easy and quick as possible for the user to answer. Users can therefore choose between two to three quick reply buttons. This has two advantages. On the one hand, users are helped to answer questions. So they don’t have to think about what they should answer and don’t have to type in their question themselves. This saves time. Especially at Christmas time, when most people are in a Christmas rush anyway. On the other hand, this prevents misunderstandings. Thanks to the buttons, users will only ask what the bot already knows and can therefore always answer.
For such a simple and small use case, ready-made chatbot tools are suitable for implementation, where dialogs can be defined via drag and drop and the chatbot can then be added to the desired website using a plugin.
Tinkerbelle opted for the simple and intuitive tool, aiaibot.com, for the implementation. After just a few hours, the first prototype was ready and could be tested by the team and long-standing customers, with whom a friendly and personal relationship of trust exists. During testing, we first checked that all defined dialogs were integrated into the chatbot as desired, that all links were correct and that the media content worked. During the tests of the Tinkerbelle target group, short qualitative interviews were conducted to ensure that the chatbot was not too funny or too intrusive for the website visitors, but had just the right amount of humor and extroversion.
Aiaibot has integrated an analytics tool. This allowed the Tinkerbelle team to keep a constant eye on the success of the chatbot and also make individual adjustments at the beginning.
Tinkerbelle is a successful example of how chatbots don’t always have to be complex or require a lot of knowledge or a large content library.
On the contrary, in this case the success lies in the brevity and simplicity of the bot.
Between the Christmas rush, Tinkerbelle’s website visitors don’t have time for long conversations with a chatbot. But they are happy to provide a quick pep talk, here even with lots of emojis.
The chatbot was initially paused again after Christmas.
Due to the great demand for this funny bot, the company subsequently launched another chatbot on the website, which is intended to keep website visitors on the website without the Christmas story, but still in a funny and simple way and motivate them to complete a purchase.
The principle is the same again. Simple, fun, innovative, humorous and goal-oriented. The Berliners are currently even working on a new implementation idea, as the new rating and voting function in the aiaibot tool has given them some creative ideas. So Tinkerbelle has obviously really got the bot.
